Corporate and business law attorney John C. Levy was recently featured in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal on his presidency and efforts behind the founding of the Minnesota Food Truck Association. Levy, chief manager and co-owner of celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern’s AZ Canteen food truck, shared his thoughts on his new Food Truck law focus, “Through my friendship with Andrew and my experience as a business lawyer, as well as my love of food, I thought it would be fun and interesting to start a food truck as a side project… The challenges of starting a food truck business, combined with some of the more exteme reactions to food trucks of other constituencies, such as the Skyway restaurants, helped me to recognize the opportunity and need to organize all of the food trucks in Minnesota into a trade association. It’s been a great experience and helpful to my practice, working from the ground up in creating a business and developing an expertise in offering services to the food industry.”
Family Law attorney Kathryn A. Graves joined Henson & Efron, bringing her nearly 30 years of legal experience to the firm. Graves practices in the area of family law with extensive litigation experience in the trial and appellate courts on all family law issues including custody, child support, spousal maintenance and property valuation and divisions, and post-decree disputes. Tax attorney David E. Martin has joined Henson & Efron, and will focus his work on providing advice on federal, state and international tax issues to businesses and individuals. including income tax, sales tax, and gift and estate tax matters. David also will advise clients on the various tax issues arising out of their business transactions and investments, and assist clients on resolving conflicts with domestic and international tax authorities.
David received his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from William Mitchell College of Law, and a Taxation LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center. Prior to joining Henson & Efron, David was an Associate Tax Counsel at 3M Company and an attorney at the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
Business law attorney John C. Levy recently founded the Minnesota Food Truck Association (MFTA), an industry organization that will advocate for the unique issues facing the fast-growing food truck industry while supporting the vitality, diversity and quality of food trucks as they serve the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota food community. As part of his duties as President of the Association, Levy, a food truck co-owner of AZ Canteen, has recently focused much of his attention in the area of Food Truck law. He was recently interviewed by the Star Tribune upon the launch of the association. Additionally, Levy was interviewed by the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market on its Fresh & Local podcast channel, where he commented on issues facing Minneapolis food trucks in downtown Minneapolis.
Henson & Efron Litigation attorney, David Bradley Olsen was quoted in a February 26 Star Tribune article regarding the Minnesota Court of Appeals decision that people who care for sick or elderly family members in their home are entitled to unemployment benefits. Olsen notes that this case is similar to a recent case he litigated on behalf of home-care agencies and relative caregivers regarding equal pay. He states in the article “in both cases you had a group of similarly situated people who are subject to the same statutory and regulatory scheme, all providing the same services, and yet they’re treated differently.” Olsen said it’s rare for a court to strike down a statute as being unconstitutional. “It would appear to me that there are probably a lot of people out there that would benefit from this opinion,” he said. “Twice they’ve been discriminated against, and twice they won.”
Family law attorney Alan C. Eidsness was honored as a 2012 Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer. The honor recognizes the best achievements in the Minnesota legal profession based on the attorney’s leadership, involvement in major cases or other newsworthy events, excellence in corporate or transactional services, and public service. Eidsness leads the Family Law group at Henson & Efron where he has practiced since graduating summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1973.
Henson & Efron is excited to welcome its newest associate, Jillian M. Pearson. Jillian will practice in the firm’s business litigation group which represents corporations, partnerships, limited liability partnerships and individuals in a wide range of complex civil and commercial litigation matters. Pearson will represent clients in all types of cases, including arbitrations, administrative actions, multi-district and multi-state litigation, governmental regulatory, administrative actions, and a variety of state and federal court actions.
Jillian received her Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2012 and a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in English and Sociology from the University of Notre Dame in 2009. Jillian’s professional experience includes working as a clerk with the Minnesota Disability Law Center, and as a student attorney at the University of Minnesota’s Workers’ Rights Clinic. Jillian also served as a judicial extern for Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge David Minge.
In a Star Tribune article titled “Relative Caregivers Catch a Break,” Henson & Efron attorney David Bradley Olsen is acknowledged for his work representing eight home-care agencies and nine relative caregivers in Healthstar Home Health Inc. vs. Jesson, successfully challenging the legislature’s effort to cut a caregiver’s personal care assistant wages if the caregiver is related to the patient. The article reported on the Department of Human Services’ decision not to appeal the Minnesota Court of Appeals decision that deemed the legislation unconstitutional.
Estate planning attorney Amy E. Papenhausen has been named shareholder, effective January 1, 2013. Papenhausen focuses on estate planning, business succession planning, probate and trust administration, conservatorships and guardianships and estate and trust litigation. Additionally, Papenhausen serves on the firm’s marketing committee. Papenhausen received her Juris Doctor in 2001 from William Mitchell College of Law and practiced elsewhere prior to joining Henson & Efron in 2007.
Henson & Efron is pleased to announce attorney Stuart T. Williams has been elected vice president of the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy for 2013. The Board’s seven members are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor. The Minnesota Board of Pharmacy is responsible for the licensing and regulation of more than 7,000 pharmacists, 1,800 pharmacies, and 9,000 pharmacy technicians in Minnesota. Stuart has served as a member of the Board since 2011.
Henson & Efron attorney Stuart T. Williams has been re-elected as vice president of the Minnesota Board of Nursing for 2013. Stuart has served as a member of the board since July 2010. The Minnesota Board of Nursing is responsible for licensing and regulating more than 110,000 nurses and all nursing school programs in the state of Minnesota. Henson & Efron is proud to have Stuart serve on the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
